The IBIT Foundation is a technology centre which is a public, not-for-profit foundation with competitive
finance objectives, as established in its Founding Charter approved by the Council of the Balearic Islands
Government on 20 February 1998.
The overriding mission of the iBit Foundation is the analysis, development and promotion of new technologies to lead the Balearic Islands towards the Information and Knowledge Society. To this end, it carries out activities and studies orientated towards the development of actions that include training, research, promotion, assistance and any other that will enable the improvement and driving of all layers of Balearic society in the use of ICT. This is achieved via the promotion, analysis, the carrying out of studies, training, investigation, meetings and conventions to incentivise debate in the fields of technological innovation, whilst also seeking to acquire funds for the financing of all mentioned activities and any other projects that will drive this sector in the Autonomous Region of the Balearic Islands.
Its origins date from 1994, when the Government of the Balearic Islands set up the
BIT Institute (Balearic Islands Institute of
Technological Innovation) in order to take part in developing largely European projects for acquiring
knowledge and the use of remote data applications. The projects developed during those years have led to the IBIT
Foundation being currently being considered a landmark for technological innovation projects and one of the only
official technology centres on the Balearic Islands.
