To provide an entry into the information society and e-business for all companies in the Balearic Islands by carrying
out projects encouraging the use of new technologies by society in general and by companies in particular.
Work is going on on different project that can be classified into four main areas:
- Studies. Directed towards discovering the current state of the business network and detecting its technological needs. The evaluation of the results of these projects serves to fix the future lines of action of the department and as a basis for the objectives pursued in new projects.
- Research projects. Specific research on certain technologies to adapt them to the actual needs of SMEs.
- Technology implementation projects. Actual implementation of technologies already developed, either for the IBIT Foundation or for outside organisations. The SMEs benefiting from the results of the scheme will participate in fixing the objectives and requirements of the projects carried on.
- Promotion, publicity and training projects. The aim is to publicise the results of the work done by the department and train companies in the use of new technologies and e-business. The results are also publicised among the scientific community by presenting papers to congresses relating to e-business or the information society and publishing articles in journals and digital spaces specialising in these matters.
In order to develop projects, the IBIT Foundation studies and works with different technologies and now has broad experience in the following fields:
- Development of Internet applications with the use of databases: Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access through the use of Cold Fusion type applications or other open code ones based on Java, such as Apache Jboss or Tomcat.
- Development of distributed applications based on inter-operability protocols. In this field there is experience in the SOAP interoperability protocol based on the exchange of XML messages on HTTP in decentralised, distributed environments.
- Digital processing of images. Projects have been developed based on a component of digital processing of images important for improving research and access to graphic information in Internet-based environments.
- Semantic Web. Application of the principles of the semantic web to the labelling of graphic content based on standards like RDF, Dublin Core or XMP.
- Security and digital certification. Projects have been developed to certify official company information in public directories accessible from the Internet, in order to increase the trust of users who connect to company websites to look at information or to carry out financial transactions.
- Electronic means of payment. Integration of virtual PSTs of different banking institution with the application of e-commerce.
